Puzzle # 21 Magic Square with a Difference

Magic Square with a Difference

By

KT Rajagopalan

The question:

You have seen a magic square, haven’t you? The one where all the rows, all the columns and both the diagonals add to the same number (which we can call the ‘magic sum’).

Here is one such:

6

1

8

7

5

3

2

9

4

Here is another, partly filled, but the difference is that it is the product, not the sum, of the rows, the columns and the diagonals that are the same (which we can call the ‘magic product’).

d

32

f

4

512

What is the sum of d and f, given that all the numbers in the magic square are positive integers?

(a) 192         (b) 1932       (c) 1024        (d) 136

Would You Like a Hint?
