Squaring the Cube
By
KT Rajagopalan
The question
Carpenter Casper has received an order for making a large number of wooden blocks of 4*4*4 cms. His son Tommy stacks the output during the week in the form of a cube.
In the next two days, Casper makes a third of that number. Having completed half the job, he heaves a sigh of relief. Unable to make a cube, Tommy spreads the entire production in the form of three equal squares.
What is the least number of blocks the order is for?
(a) 1458 (b) 972 (c) 729 (d) 1944
