Of Media, violence and prejudice
|
emind the press of its role, pointing out that the liberty of the press is the “Palladium of all the civil, political and religious rights” of citizens. Today, many good, even great, things are happening in India. Our economy is booming, reforms in education are taking place, attempts are being made to resolve various conflict situations in the subcontinent through dialogue. However, much more needs to be done. The economically challenged sections must be enabled to have a share in the prospering economy, peace with neighbors is welcome but the increasing violence within the society is disturbing. There is an urgent need for empowering the deprived. But all this is possible if a genuinely free press – free not only from government’s arm-twisting tactics, but free of ideological and other prejudices too, - comes into play. Only then it would be possible to correct various imperfections exist can be corrected. If the press fails in its role then all conceivable disasters become probable.
In Thukral’s well researched tome chapters like Media’s symbiotic relationship with violence, War and the Media: The killing Fields of Truth, Media and Conflict Resolution etc are thought provoking.
