nadians tired of waiting are now open to visit and learn about their multitude of options beyond the realms of the public health system. There is a large population of Indian origin in Canada who are also likely to visit India for treatment.
Need for world class Medi-city in this region
Chandigarh caters to the healthcare needs of 600 lacs of population of northern India (population equal to Thailand). As elsewhere, 80% OPD patients visit private clinics and bear the expenditure from their own pockets. Despite the present facilities being better than adjoining states, the city needs to expand its healthcare services, quantity as well as quality wise. The city conceived a medi-city to make the healthcare services world-class. This will take care of the growing needs of the people of the region as well as attract foreign medical tourists from all over the globe esp. the developed countries viz. Canada, U.K., USA etc..
As per recommendations made it should be a cluster of hospitals, one each being in the field of cardiology, oncology, obesity, geriatrics, orthopedics and neurosurgery, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, dental etc. In addition it will have a world class convention centre, training program for medical teachers, CME for nurses and paramedics and a wing for free service to poorer segments of society. The medi city would generate revenue so that more public hospitals like PGI could be set up. The Indian Diaspora from Canada and other countries can vouch for the quality of medical care and transparency of the payment systems, if a world class hospital is set up and a regulator enforces the above mentioned essentials. This will also improve free care to the poor, since the revenue earned from the medical tourists and the local rich patients can be ploughed back in the healthcare sector.
